
Exposure Therapy
As a Certified ERP (Exposure Response Prevention) Therapist, my job is to help break that cycle so you can get your life back.
Often, we think of OCD as overt behaviors, such as tapping, checking and rechecking, counting, hand washing, etc. However, it can also include the “Pure O” (obsessions only) such as reassurance seeking, avoidance, and mental rituals.
Phobias are also complex because they are more debilitating than we’d like to admit. Our fears can lead us to behaviors that isolate us from our friends and family.
In ERP, we identity the core root of these thoughts and behaviors and how/why they pop up. While we will cover some coping skills for safety (grounding exercises, deep breathing, etc), ERP focuses on building DISTRESS TOLERANCE. This means slowly working through a list of unpleasant things until you are able to function without needing to engage in your obsessions, compulsions, and/or phobias.
With phobias, we also tackle the fears using in vivo (imagined), in vitro (in reality) or in VR.
